Jewelers Dislike Online Diamond Retailers

Jewelrystoreredcircle I am always fascinated to hear how traditional jewelers view online diamond retailers.  A recent article in Richmond’s “West End’s Best” magazine contained comments from a local jeweler who is striving to provide a stress-free experience for his customers.  The jeweler suggests that customers should research online before making a big purchase and taking time to learn the 4 C’s of diamonds (cut, color, clarity, and carat weight) beforehand can help when it comes time to purchase a diamond.  The jeweler then says it is important to find an independent jeweler with a knowledgeable staff whom the customer can trust. He then urges customer not to purchase diamonds on the Internet.

What I find intriguing is the jeweler’s advice seems targeted at what is best for his store, not necessarily what is best for the diamond shopper.  Look at each point of his advice.

  1. Do Research Online – If a retailer truly thinks providing extensive diamond education is important, they should show that with actions.  The jeweler’s web site only has a few paragraphs on diamond education.  Diamond Source of Virginia has hundreds of pages of diamond education and shopping advice.  We think actions speak louder than words as to who believes diamond education benefits diamond shoppers.
  2. Find Independent Jeweler – Only an independent jeweler suggests using an independent jeweler so that is no surprise.  What the jeweler failed to say is why he thinks an independent jeweler is better.  Our clients tell us that most jewelry-store employees seem to have little knowledge about diamonds.  We call them tag readers and they are certainly all too common in chain stores.  The problem with any jewelry “store” is that the people behind the counter will say or do anything to sell what they have in their display cases, even if it is not what their customer really wants or deserves.
  3. Do No Buy On the Internet – Of course a jewelry store owner encourages customer not to buy online.  Since shoppers can get a bigger, better diamond and a lower price online, jewelry stores can only use made-up fear tactics to combat online competitors.  Telling you not to purchase from an online retailer and giving no reason for that statement is self-serving for the jewelry store but is it really the best advice for the diamond shopper?

Diamond Source of Virginia believes that diamond shoppers deserve the best diamond education possible and we strive to provide that via our web site, email, telephone, and in person support.  We believe diamond shoppers should have access to diamond experts to answer questions and search for the best diamond in the country that meets the client’s requirements.  We believe diamond shoppers deserve not only exceptional service but also exceptionally low prices so we keep overhead very low so our prices can be very low.

It is no wonder that jewelry stores hate the word Internet because it enables Diamond Source of Virginia to compete as a premier diamond retailer not only in the Richmond, Virginia but also nationwide and internationally.

More Bling For Your Buck

Our local clients in the Richmond area often tell us Diamond Source of Virginia is Richmond’s Best Kept Secret but that is starting to change.  WWBT, the local NBC Channel 12 station, has a weekly consumer investigative report called “On Your Side.”  Their special consumer reports alert local viewers on how to save money, avoid consumer troubles, and get help with problems.

The “On Your Side” staff discovered Diamond Source of Virginia in June while doing online research of area businesses.  They called to ask if they could come out for an interview and the following video shows the findings of their research, discussions with clients, and on site interview.

The word is spreading quickly throughout Richmond, as well as nationwide, that Diamond Source of Virginia is the premier retailer of exceptional loose diamonds and spectacular diamond rings of all styles.

You Can Have It All

I was re-reading an article today written by a jewelry industry “sales expert.”  He stated that customers want three things from a jewelry store:

  • Great service
  • Top quality products
  • Low price

He then goes on to say that it would be great if you could figure out how to give them all three and still make money, but no one ever has.  His conclusion was that you have to figure out which two you can provide that will allow you to stay in business and make some profit.

Diamond_source_of_va I have read that article several times in the past months but today it seemed to strike a real nerve with me.  Perhaps it is because we work hard every day to provide all three things to every one of our clients and we continue to stay in business and grow.

How can we do what the “sales expert” says is impossible; we focus on our clients and have developed a better way to sell diamonds.  The traditional jewelry store has been doing business the same way for decades.  They build or rent a store, decorate it with lavish display cases and lighting, stock it with hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars of inventory, advertise on billboards and in magazines and newspapers, hire sales personnel to wait on customers and then try to sell customers what they have in the display cases.  All went well with this strategy for many years as long as their competitors did the same.  They could mark items up 100% to 200% and thus pay their overhead and have plenty left over for the storeowner’s pocket.

About ten years ago, the jewelry industry was given a jolt by the introduction of the Internet.  At first the storeowners simply said, “Nobody will buy a diamond online” and went on doing business the same as usual.  However, over time, the jewelry stores suddenly realized that they now faced a new type of competition.  This new competitor did not have the high overhead of a retail store with inventory so could offer prices that were a fraction of those in the traditional jewelry store.  Moreover, what made the threat seem even more insidious is that these competitors often were in other cities and states.

The jewelry storeowner quickly started blaming all their problems on the “Internet” rather than looking at their own business and asking what they need to do to compete in this new game.  They started using scare tactics like saying merchandise sold by online retailers was inferior and the “rejects” from the traditional jewelers stock.  They warned that online retailers were switching diamonds or certifications.  They cautioned that online retailers were not diamond experts and thus could not provide the advice and product compared to the “established” jewelry store.

Ironically, all the arguments they were using against the online retailers were really the shortcomings of many, if not most jewelry stores.  These statements are based on fear, not fact, because the typical online diamond retailer can sell higher quality diamonds for less money.  In addition, online retailers often have more experience and diamond expertise than the tag readers who stand behind most jewelry counters.  When I mention online retailers, I am describing established businesses that find most of their customers online and I am excluding most of the snake oil salespersons who hock their goods on eBay.

Getting back to the three things clients want (quality, price and service), it is fairly easy to see how online retailers can provide better quality and price but what about the service.  All too often, the jewelry store defines service with the old concept of having inventory, a nice store and fixing items when they break.  However, the online retailer has defined service as providing the client with the best advice and product possible without intimidation and often from the convenience of their home.

At Diamond Source of Virginia, we seek to find the best diamond in terms of value that meets our client’s specific requirements.  We search the inventories of hundreds of cutters and wholesalers worldwide to find the best of the best diamonds.  Then we offer to help set the diamond in rings and other jewelry items using some of the top designers and manufacturers in the country.  Because we do not own inventory, we can be unbiased and on the client’s side rather than trying to push some item that has been sitting in a display case for years.  We provide advice not only on the diamond, but also on the mounting, the insurance, and the cleaning of the jewelry item.

The bottom line is that we do provide what the client wants (great quality, low price and exceptional service) and as a result, have most of our business come from referrals and repeat buyers.

Diamond District

When I was in New York last week examining a beautiful five carat cushion diamond for a client, I was reminded what a fascinating area the Diamond District in Manhattan is compared to our suburban office in Richmond, Virginia.

Diamonddistrictstreet The Diamond District is located on West 47th Street between Fifth Avenue and the Avenue of the Americas (Sixth Avenue) in midtown Manhattan.  Most tourists visit the area because it is located one block south of Rockefeller Center and just a block east of the Broadway Theater District.

More than 2,000 businesses are located in the district and almost all of them are related to the diamond and jewelry industry.  Retailers line the streets and hawk their goods.  Numerous “exchanges” house groups of retail booths preying on the tourists thinking that there are diamond deals just waiting for them.  However, the real diamond business is located in the upper levels of the Diamond District buildings behind tight security and closed to the public.  The Diamond Dealers Club (DDC) of New York started operations in 1931 and is now the largest and oldest diamond bourse.

A diamond bourse is an association for dealers and traders of rough and polished diamonds, or a building provided by the bourse, housing members, who may also be cutters (manufacturers), brokers (agents). Every bourse has a strict set of rules for conduct to which all members must adhere. Individual bourses are usually members of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses that has 25 bourse associations worldwide.

Another landmark of the Diamond District that is not open to the public is the New York Office of the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) that provides diamond and gemstone training and grading reports for the industry.

It is estimated that 9 out of 10 diamonds in the United States pass through the Diamond District in New York, the largest diamond hub in the country for trading diamonds.  The New York Diamond District , the Ramat Gan in Israel, and Antwerp, Belgium are the three main international diamond trading centers.

For most of its history, the diamond industry functioned almost entirely on trust with most deals sealed with a handshake.  The pressure on profits has created an increasing dependence on technology to communicate inventories, display detailed specifications and consummate transactions.  Still there is a unique camaraderie between the members of the diamond industry.  There are warm welcomes and hardy handshakes when old friend and competitors meet each other.  They know there are plenty of diamond sales for everyone and that for the industry to stay strong, they most work together to create a secure and efficient trading environment.

While the tourist think they are seeing the Diamond District in the retail shops on the street, the real business of diamonds takes place in the offices and trading floors above where millions of dollars of diamonds are bought and sold with the shake of the hand.
